Mobile marketing is phenomenal in the fact that it can deliver highly personalised and relevant information to the consumer, you. As a consumer uses their phone for their daily lives, apps and websites are tracking and collecting personal data for the use of building a profile of them and then targeting ads based on their behaviours on their mobiles.
Ads get a bad rep simply because they're too intrusive and there's too many of them, however ads are good if you like what you see and they aren't a completely unrelated topic to your likes. There are various ways to grab your consumers attention through non-intrusive methods such as pay-per-click ads which target long-tail search terms (3 or 4 keyword phrases tending to be highly specific). This would mean seeing an ad that you have been searching for and would want instead of a marketer using flashy display advertising and unsolicited ads (pop-ups) that just grab your attention away.
Basically, advertisements through mobile marketing can be unwanted and annoying only if they are made to be that way. Through properly sourcing data and using it in a less intrusive way would allow your mobile marketing techniques to be favourable in the eyes of consumers and form a positive image.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to any thoughts :)
Kaan, what a great article on the implications of mobile marketing. The post explained the concept well for a newcomer to mobile marketing such as myself.
ReplyDeleteWhile mobile marketing & advertisements can be tailored to the individual consumer, where do you think there is a ‘happy medium’ in which marketers can utilise the techniques and objectives of mobile marketing, along with traditional forms (blasting) of marketing and advertising?
Cheers!
I think as long as ads aren't popping up on my screen every second, I'm fine with seeing various advertisements for different products. Yes targeted ads are definitely preferred but if marketers minimise the clutter and randomness of ads then I think this is the 'happy medium'.
DeleteGreat article you have on there on mobile marketing! I myself am a user of smartphones, and with over 3 to 4 hours of my time is spent on it. I do see mobile marketing as an effective way to reach people these days. Advertisements on my social media feeds have annoyed the crap out of me seeing the same thing over and over again as well as gave me insights on things (like new clothing brands) that i never knew existed!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment !
DeleteI completely agree, we can have both sides of advertising being targeted and attention-grabbing ads.
